    Abstract

In this paper, we propose an augmented reality system for the underground pipeline construction. In general, visual AR systems operate based on the predefined 2D pattern known as a maker. In many situations, however, the predefined pattern is not available, and the operation of the system is quite limited. We present a technique to make use of the manhole on the road as a marker. We also attempt to use the GPS in order to retrieve 3D object of underground pipeline corresponding to the location of field worker. In order to verify the proposed framework, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system in various situations.
